About the project

CIVIC is a community health and safety research project based in London, Ontario. We are deploying a network of 16 traffic and noise sensors at 16 sites in a residential neighbourhood, hosted by volunteer residents who have agreed to mount these small devices on their windows facing the street. Each sensor continuously counts and classifies decibel levels (noise sensors) and pedestrians, cyclists, cars, and heavy vehicles (traffic sensors) — generating the kind of granular, long-term data that currently does not exist for these streets.

The data

All data collected by CIVIC is open and freely available. We publish monthly data packages, including noise levels, pedestrian counts, cyclist counts, vehicle counts, and uptime statistics. Data is available in CSV and GeoJSON formats.

Some of our community hosts

CIVIC would not exist without the London residents who agreed to host a sensor on their property. Hosting takes about 20 minutes to set up, requires only a power outlet and Wi-Fi connection, and can be ended at any time. Hosts retain the right to withdraw their data at any point.
